Why Did Duncan Dump Veronica?

Status: Solved

Veronica Mars and Duncan Kane were the perfect couple in Neptune High. Dating one of the richest and most popular guys in school gave Veronica a status far higher than the daughter of the local sheriff might expect. But behind the scenes, trouble brewed. Veronica knew some of it. Lilly, her best friend and Duncan's sister, warned Veronica that Celeste Kane, their mother, who was always cold towards Veronica, would try to break them up to prevent the diversion of her son's affections. Veronica knew her own mother reacted unexpectedly to the news that she and Duncan were a couple. Yet this did not unduly trouble Veronica, luxuriating in the warmth of first love.

Then days before Lilly was murdered, Duncan ended it. Without warning, without explanation. Confused and tearful, Veronica turned to Lilly whose advice to move on fell on disappointed ears. And then Lilly too was gone.

Veronica's investigations into Lilly's death, her mother's abandonment and her parentage got her closer to the truth. She learned that Duncan suffers from epilepsy and can be prone to episodes, violent episodes of which he retains no memory, including the attempted strangulation of his father, Jake Kane, in the same week that she was dumped. She learned that Celeste was far from passive in her attempts to split them up, going so far as to attempt to inform Veronica of a relationship between her mother and Jake. Most sickening of all, she learned that Jake may be her father and Duncan, her half-brother. All this she knows now, but what did Duncan know then? The answer eluded her until Duncan finally started talking and told her about his personal trip to purgatory.

Duncan dumped Veronica when Celeste told him Veronica was his sister. He tried to cut her out of his life but it didn't stop him from loving her. And when he found her, warm and compliant on a bed the night of Shelly Pomroy's party, the GHB Logan had given him allowed his love to overcome that little taboo called incest. Angst and more angst as Duncan admits he loves her still. Golly.
