"I was hoping your desire to find the real rapist might outweigh your need to drag me over the coals."
To drag, or haul, someone over the coals is to scold him or her for some real or imagined crime. One imagines it comes from the olden days when bad guys would be dragged over hot coals to punish them for being bad. Of course, in these days of freedom from cruel and unusual punishment, it's more a phrase than an actual action. Unless you happen to be a possible terrorist.
